When a youth enters a psychiatric residential treatment facility (PRTF), the journey toward healing can feel deeply personal and sometimes isolating. At Saint Joseph’s Children’s Home in Torrington, Wyoming, we believe that while every adolescent’s struggle is unique, they shouldn’t have to heal alone.
Group psychotherapy is a cornerstone of our treatment program, offering residents a safe, structured environment to rebuild social skills, process emotions, and rediscover their voices.
For adolescents dealing with trauma or behavioral challenges, traditional one-on-one therapy is vital, but group therapy provides something unique: peer perspective.
In a group setting, youths realize they aren’t the only ones facing these hurdles. This “normalization” helps reduce shame and builds a sense of belonging that is essential for long-term recovery.
At Saint Joseph’s, group assignments are carefully curated based on the resident’s specific needs, including:
Age and developmental level
Current emotional and clinical readiness
Social and behavioral goals
Every resident begins their journey in a highly structured group. This “foundational” phase is designed to ensure emotional and physical safety for everyone. In these early sessions, adolescents focus on:
Active Listening: Learning to hear peers without judgment.
Turn-Taking: Understanding the importance of giving everyone space to share their feelings.
Feedback Processing: Learning how to receive and offer reactions in a constructive, healthy way.
“By starting in a more structured format, we can better assure safety and provide the predictable environment these youth need to feel secure enough to share.”
Healing is a progression of maturity and self-awareness. As residents grow more comfortable and demonstrate increased emotional regulation, they move into advanced, less structured groups.
In these higher-level sessions, the “training wheels” are gradually removed. Adolescents begin to:
Take greater responsibility for maintaining a safe and respectful group climate.
Lead discussions on peer support and accountability.
Practice the conflict-resolution skills they will need when they transition back to their communities.
