Guardian of Light: Richard Nelson

Guardians of Light: Our People, Our Stories. At Saint Joseph’s Children’s Home, the real magic comes from the people who pour their hearts into serving our youth and families every single day. Our staff bring compassion, creativity, and resilience to every role—and we think it’s time to celebrate them!

Staff Spotlight: Richard Nelson

Role: Facilities Director
Years at SJCH: 21 years

Richard has been part of the Saint Joseph’s Children’s Home team for 21 years, ensuring our campus remains a safe, welcoming place for both youth and staff. When asked what reminds him why he does this work, he said there’s no single moment — it’s the handwritten thank-you cards, the high-fives in the hallway, and the invitations to graduations and weddings from former residents that make it all meaningful.

  • What the youth have taught him: Insight, wisdom, and compassion can come in young, small packages.
  • His role: Helping to provide and ensure a physical environment that is worthy of the youth that we serve and the staff that serve them
  • 3 words for SJCH: Commitment, Care, Learning
  • Mascot pick: A lighthouse, because a lighthouse provides guidance and direction, even in the worst storms or the darkest of nights. It assists in avoiding perils and unseen pitfalls while helping travelers find a safe harbor.
  • Superpower wish: Healing Touch.
  • Fun fact: He was a member of the Youth Conservation Corp for two summers while in High School.
