Staff Spotlight: Kurstin Barrett

Role: Educational Assistant
Years at SJCH: 7 years

Kurstin has been part of the Saint Joseph’s Children’s Home team for nearly seven years, helping create a safe, supportive environment where youth can begin to heal. When asked what reminds her why she does this work, she recalled a young girl who spent more than a year learning to trust. One evening, as Kurstin read to her before bed, the girl rested her head on Kurstin’s shoulder and shared that she always felt safe when Kurstin was around and knew she would protect and advocate for her. It’s a moment Kurstin still thinks about five years later and one that reminds her why this work matters.

  • What the youth have taught her: Hard times create dynamic individuals with incredible strength and depth.
  • Her role: I am a lighthouse during many different kinds of storms and times for children. I help to guide them safely to where they need to be and provide the resources for success when they see my light.
  • 3 words for SJCH: Persistent, uplifting, hopeful.
  • Mascot pick: Chameleon, we can adapt to many environments and situations
  • Superpower wish: Teleportation
  • Fun fact: She accidentally cut part of her Grandma’s finger off in a farming accident, and her grandma still loves her.
