St. Joseph's Children's Home utilizes the Psychoeducational Model (PEM) as its primary treatment model on the living units. PEM is a nationally recognized model of care for youth with psychiatric and related behavioral disorders. PEM is therapeutically oriented and combines social skill instruction with intervention strategies. PEM is a daily, ongoing program model that assists in teaching youth to manage their behavior, reinforces appropriate behavior, corrects inappropriate behavior and helps youth cope with crises calmly and consistently. PEM provides opportunities for youth in the program to monitor their thoughts, feelings and behaviors, control their impulses, delay gratification and empathize and build appropriate relationships.
